This week’s 100 Word Challenge for Grownups is to write a short piece including the phrase “…you bought her what…”

“You bought her what all the tutors think she’ll like, but she doesn’t need toys or sweets. Taika conjures playthings from thin air. Her whims command the kitchen. Once she ate only custard for a week. They must keep the king’s pet happy, you see, lest she conjure some beast as rebuke, despite the chains binding her here.”

The former steward fixed my eyes with his rheumy ones, his whiskey breath an assault.

“What she wants,” he growled, “is freedom. Do you have that in your battered little satchel?”
