Home sweet home

I spent last week at the beach with my family. We had a great week, and as a souvenir, I brought back the realization that I am old.

My father used to drag us back from our vacations a day or two early. He’d just announce that we were leaving early and that was that. Definitely a killjoy move, and not one I’m willing to make, but I am starting to understand his motivation. By the end of our week, I wanted my own bed and the larger space of our house so that my precious little family whom I adore wouldn’t be in my face 24/7. I wasn’t eager to return to work, but I did miss my office and the unwritten rule of my closed door: “Mom is working; go entertain yourselves.”

Does this make me a bad person?

Truly, there is such a thing as too much togetherness! I am appalled to find that I am eager for the mayhem of the school year to return so that i can get some downtime and some sleep. A wee bit overbooked this summer, it seems – and it is almost all travel that has me on my own with the kids around the clock. So – if you’re a bad person, I am. too. Hmmmmm.

Actually, I find that being happy to get back home at the end of a vacation is a sign that you are happy with your life. And that’s a good thing.

No it doesn’t and I don’t think it is because you are older in years but just know yourself better! (does that sound like a good ‘get out’)?!

  4. I’m with you. I’m a homebody. I haven’t actually been on a vacation in about 8 years.

As one who opts out of those family vacations altogether, you’re an absolute vacation-saint : )

    Not a bad person 🙂

  7. LOL! No, it doesn’t make you a bad person. I’m the same way. We’ve done ‘staycations’ the last few years because we’re out of our freakin’ minds, and by day four I am ready to book MYSELF into a hotel across town and develop the sort of selective amnesia that would make me equally excited all ONE HUNDRED TIMES my son says “Hey, Mom! Watch this!” in a given day. If that makes us bad people, at least we’re not alone!

My dad used to do that too. Vacation is over NOW. We took very few.

We have fixed the “in your face” vacation problem by staying in vacation houses where there is plenty of room. And we go to Maine which is a very big state. We’re always sad to come home to reality. And we buy lots of lottery tickets while we’re away.

  9. Not at all. You needed a vacation from your vacation. Sometimes we over scheduled our vacations and we come home exhausted and have to return to work the very next day. So you are smart!
